I'm tired. I don't recommend the drive from Abiquiu to the SF Bay Area. You can do it once, but, at least with little kids its the single time you will want to.
Car trips actually get easier once your youngest is old enough to listen to an audiobook. For us, that was age ~3.5 or so. _Peter and the Starcatchers_, interspersed with They Might Be Giants, got us from Orlando, FL to Washington DC last year.

hmm. I recall the trip from Los Alamos to Los Angeles being grueling when I was a kid. Even up to the point where I was driving.
