Indonesia Declines to Purchase Broken Down Kilo Submarines From Russia

Indonesia has turned down a Russian offer of second-hand 'Kilo'-class submarines, Admiral Marsetio, chief of staff of the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL), announced on 12 March.

The navy made the decision after sending a delegation to Russia to inspect the submarines and discuss their potential transfer with Russian officials. Adm Marsetio said that the Indonesians had learned that the submarines on offer had been idle for two years and had damaged engines. In the delegations' opinion, it would be too costly to repair them, he said.
