Hehe - it's excellent soil in the south of England. Cretaceous clay and chalk. I can't remember what the underlying rock in Champagne itself is like, but I shouldn't think it's that dissimilar. We've actually had chardonnay for a few years too.
Personally, I prefer the Palaeozoic rocks - good for nothing but beer!

actually beat Italy in fizzy wine stakes and as you know us brits invented Champagne plus any other drink really
