British Looking to Build new Tank to Replace Challenger 2 in Response to T-14 Armata

Senior British Army officers and procurement officials are examining the future of the BAE Systems Challenger 2 main battle tank (MBT), including possibly buying a new vehicle.

The effort is a continuation of a project launched more than a decade ago to upgrade the British Army's tank fleet, but earlier this year army chiefs ordered a wider effort to look at radical solutions to the increasing obsolescence of the service's 227 Challenger 2s.

Russia Ordering Over 200 new BMP-3s: a bad Sign for the Kurganets and Other Armored Fighting Vehicle Programs

The Russian Defense Ministry will receive by the end of 2017 more than 200 BMP-3 infantry combat vehicles, Executive Director of the vehicle’s manufacturer Kurganmashzavod (subsidiary of Tractor Plants corporate group) Alexander Klyuzhev told TASS on Wednesday.

“In 2015, a long-term contract was concluded with the Russian Defense Ministry on supply of more than 200 BMP-3 infantry combat vehicles to the Russian army units in 2015-2017,” he said.

India Restarts Future Infantry Combat Vehicle Program

India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has revived its five-year old USD12 billion indigenous Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) programme.

The 20-22 ton FICV was envisaged in 2009 as India's first indigenously designed platform, with the MoD looking to procure 2,610 platforms to replace the Indian Army's obsolete fleet of Soviet-era BMP-1s and BMP-2s.

The FICV project was abandoned in 2012 after Russia offered India its BMP-3 ICV, but in December 2013 this proposal was rejected in favour of indigenous development.

The MoD is expected to finance 80% of the cost of two FICV prototypes, of which one will be selected for production following 18-24 months of field trials.

Russians Unveil Kitchen Sink Armoured Fighting Vehicle

Russia's Uralvagonzavod defense manufacturer on Wednesday unveiled the BMPT-72 tank support fighting vehicle, dubbed the “Terminator-2,” at the Russia Arms Expo 2013 in Nizhny Tagil.

The BMPT-72 is an extensive modernization of the world-famous T-72 main battle tank, also produced by Uralvagonzavod. Compared with its predecessor – the BMPT – the BMPT-72 has an improved fire control system and better turret weapon station protection.

“The key advantage that the BMPT-72 gives to all the counties that operate T-72 tanks is that they can promptly and at minimal cost upgrade their armies to an ultra-modern level, and enhance capacity, mobility, protection and armament without purchasing new high-cost machines,” Uralvgonzavod said in press release prior to the Nizhny Tagil show.

The BMPT-72 is armed with two 30-mm cannons, two 30-mm grenade launchers, four launchers for 130-mm Ataka-T anti-tank guided missiles, a 7.62-mm machine gun, and two 81-mm smoke grenade launchers.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Wednesday that the idea to build new heavily armed tank support vehicles emerged on the basis of experience acquired by the Russian military during the First Chechen War in North Caucasus, especially during the urban fighting in Grozny in 1995 when Russian troops lost a large number of combat vehicles to “guerrilla warfare” tactics used by Chechen separatists.
