Russian Cracking Down on Corruption at Nuclear Submarine Shipyard

Law enforcement authorities in Russia's Primorye Region have launched seven criminal cases following an investigation into suspected embezzlement related to contracts with a naval shipyard, said local police.

The contracts were for refitting nuclear submarines at the Zvezda shipyard, one of the largest yards of its type in Russia, in the town of Bolshoi Kamen in southern Primorye, in the far east of the country.

Speaking at a televised press conference on 6 February, the deputy head of the Primorye Region police, Ilya Shamratov, said the sums involved totalled more than RUB1 billion (USD28 million), according to an initial investigation.
