Indian Army Chief of Staff General Bikram Singh ended a three-day visit to the Maldives on 10 May during which he sought to persuade his hosts that India - and not China - should construct a INR30 billion (USD500 million) port on the archipelago.
Officials in New Delhi said Gen Singh discussed with Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Defence Minister Mohammad Nazim, and other senior officials India's involvement in building the port facility at Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) on the Kaafu atoll, northwest of the Maldives capital Male.
As well as ship berthing facilities, the proposed UTF port is also expected to include naval repair stations and a training facility and housing complex for the Maldivian National Defence Forces (MNDF).
