The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has sketched out early design and technology development activities intended to pave the way for a new class of nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) to enter the Royal Navy (RN) service from mid- to late-2030s, replacing the Astute class.
Now in its pre-concept phase, the Maritime Underwater Future Capability (MUFC) project is exploring technology options, some of which could deliver an SSN that would be significantly cheaper to build and operate and more flexible in operation.
