Australia's amphibious capability has been boosted by the commissioning in Sydney on 3 December of HMAS Adelaide : the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) second 27,800-tonne landing helicopter dock (LHD).
Based on the design of the Spanish Navy strategic projection ship Juan Carlos , the 231 m Adelaide joins first-of-class HMAS Canberra , which was commissioned in November 2014.
