Avenger:


ATD-X/X-2/F-3:



Japan's X-2 proof of concept stealth fighter is being readied for MoD tests.

Some are suggesting Japan step up defense cooperation with Taiwan, including in the X-2 aircraft.

FCAS:

Spain wants a family of systems to replace the F/A-18s it has. 

J-20:

Some are claiming China will have a dozen J-20s declared having reached IOC by the end of the year.  Perhaps next year, I'd think, but I doubt in 2016.

KF-X:

South Korea is seeking to procure more technologies from the US for its KF-X 5th gen aircraft.

PAK-FA:

Russia claims to be developing a new anti radiation (radar killer) missile for the PAK-FA. 

A new engine is being designed for the PAK-FA.   

The Indian variant of the PAK-FA, the FGFA, is claimed to be superior to the Chinese J-20 and Russia thinks it will have the FGFA deal signed by January first.

Sixth Generation Fighters:

The next gen US 'fighter' aircraft are the programs to watch in 2017.

F-22:

F-22s had a weapon systems problem that impacted its stealthiness that has been fixed.

F-35:

McCain has stated the unilateral contract for the F-35 is demonstrating how broken the defense procurement establishment is.

The F-35 program is probably too big for even Trump to kill if he wanted to.

Is the F-35 program's development being cut short?

The developmental F-35s built early in the program are going to need a service life extension due to heavy testing and use.

The F-35 MRO work overseas has been outlined.  RUAG Australia made the list.

Repairs to F-35 insulation have been completed and the affected aircraft returned to flight.



The USMC conducted trials of the F-35B on the USS America, one of its jeep carriers.   12 F-35Bs were aboard during the tests.

The USMC will deploy the USS Wasp as a Sea Control Ship with F-35Bs to relieve pressure on the USN's supercarriers in 2017.

Congress' final budget is leaving out the extra 11 F-35s asked for by the Pentagon.

Canada canceled its procurement of F-35s and ordered F/A-18Es.  However, it will remain in the F-35 program and remaining a part of the program is being questioned.  Is it really flipping off the Lightning?

Responses to Finland's RFI for the replacement of their F/A-18s including the F-35.

Israel has ordered 17 more F-35Is.  This brings the total on order for Israel to 50.

The first F-35Is will be arriving in Israel on December 12.

Japan has had its first F-35 delivered.

Poland is postponing it procurement of a 5th gen fighter (probably F-35) to replace its old MiGs and Sukhois.  

Turkey is expecting its first two F-35s in 2018.

Avenger/MQ-XX:

There are implications for the F-35I getting its own apps built on top of the F-35 avionics.

The roll out for the F-35I is to take place on June 22.


Lockheed's manufacture of the F-35 has been slower than expected.

Until the F-35 proves it can perform in combat, Congress is not likely allow retirement the legacy aircraft.  Like the A-10.  Senator Ayotte really wants the USAF to come clean whether or not the F-35 will be replacing the A-10.  An F-35 pilot really dislikes the test saying they ought to be comparing apples to apples.

Stealth Saga #41

Avenger:

The US Air Force tested an advanced optical sensor on the General Atomics Avenger.

 MQ-XX:

MQ-XX will only have tanking and ISR capabilities, no strike, if the navy gets its way.

KF-X:

The engine maker for the KF-X is to be selected soon.

Hanwha Thales has been selected to provide the radar for the KF-X.  A bit more here.

ATD-X/X-2:






The Japanese X-2 had its maiden flight.  More info here and here.

PAK-DA:

It should be met with skepticism based on the Russian economy and moves by the Russian MOD, but its reported the PAK-DA bomber will be a stealthy flying wing and should have first flight in 2021.

Sixth Generation Fighters:

The US Navy may ditch the FA-XX for a family of systems, but at this point has started its analysis of alternatives.  It has made it clear whatever comes out will not be the same airframe as the USAF's F-X (or whatever it may be).

B-21:

The House is asking the USAF to buy more B-21 bombers.

The USAF has revised its position and stated that 100 bombers is the minimum they need to buy for the B-21.

Does Congress have enough oversight on the B-21 program?

F-22:

F-22 are being deployed from Alaska to the middle east.

The House also asked the US Air Force to study the costs of buying another 194 F-22s. This would require a restart of the F-22 production line.  It might be simply too late to restart the production line.

The Congressman Forbes' push for the F-22 might have to do with his reelection fight.

F-35:

Israel is holding firm on increasing its F-35 order.

Officials are confident about the ejection seat fix for the F-35 as well.

Spain may buy the F-35B. 

Israel's F-35Is will arrive on December 12th of this year in country.

Israel expects they will be the only Middle Eastern F-35 operator for at least a decade.

The F-35 light weight helmet has passed its first test.

Britain wants to be the sustainment center for European F-35 avionics.

Stealth Saga #31

KF-X:

The KF-X project is having turbulence because of technology issues.

PAK-FA:

Russia is having problems exporting the PAK-FA due to the perception it is not really a 5th generation fighter.

Avenger UCAV:

India has expressed interest in acquiring the General Atomics Avenger.

Taranis/FCAS:

BAe and Dassault are waiting on the Paris and London about the direction for the stealthy UCAV project.

UCLASS/CBARS:

 Here's some of the reasoning why the US Navy backed away from a stealthy aircraft for the tanker.

Sixth Generation Fighter:

Forbes discusses Northrop's 6th gen fighter but Boeing has started hinting at its own fighter concept.

Some are wondering what the 6th generation fighter will be.

The US Air Force is starting work on the electronic warfare equipment needed for the 6th generation fighter.

Long Range Strike Bomber:

Northrop has resumed work after the GAO denied Boeing's protest.  A bit more here.

It ought to be said the phrasing Boeing used in their initial response to the GAO protest denial was very, very similar to when they lost the contract and brought their protest.  I'd suspect that means there's a lawsuit coming.

The US Air Force has stated they will be releasing more details about the LRS-B in March.

F-22:

F-22s did a show of force in South Korea as a reaction to North Korea's missile launch.  Here's a little more still.  And one last one.

F-35:

The F-35 still has 400 flaws that need addressing.  Most are software.

Stealth Saga #19

UCAV:

India is seeking upwards of 100 UCAVs from the United States, including the stealthy General Atomics Avenger.

PAK-FA:

Russia is offering India a new package and price for the PAK-FA, supposedly making the aircraft cheaper.

PAK-DA:

KRET's proposals for the PAK-DA's avionics are apparently done.   That would strongly imply the aircraft has not made much progress.

LRS-B:

Northrop is preparing to start expanding its Palmdale plant for the LRS-B work.

F-35:

Finland has kicked off its HX procurement program to replace the F/A-18C/Ds.  One of the contenders is the F-35.

British Aerospace has started expanding its manufacturing facility to build their portion of the F-35.

After all the drama, Canada may still buy the F-35.

Lockheed delivered 45 F-35s this past year.

Lockheed was awarded a $1.171 billion contract to manufacture more  F-35s: 80 F-35As, 7 F-35Bs and 4 F-35Cs.

General Atomics Gets Funded for High Energy Laser Avenger Drone


Flying military robots armed with high-energy lasers? It’s a future that is exciting, terrifying — and perhaps just two years away.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., or GA-ASI, the San Diego-based company that makes the Predator and Reaper drones, is undertaking a privately funded study to integrate a 150-kilowatt solid-state laser onto its Avenger (née Predator-C) drone. If the company succeeds, a drone with a high-energy laser will be a reality at some point in 2017, company executives told Defense One.

“We’re funded right now to develop a laser module compatible with the aircraft and study putting it on the Avenger,” Michael Perry, Vice President for Mission Systems at GA-ASI, told Defense One. “We hope to be funded to do that,” he said.

Mini Crazy Thought: Triton for Carrier ISR and 2 Different UCLASS for Strike and Fleet Defense?

There is a fight right now about whether or not to make the UCLASS an ISR bird with a small strike capability or a primarily deep strike stealthy bird.


The navy already has an ISR bird.  Its the MQ-4C Triton.  Why not fly a variant (D?) off the carriers for ISR?  After all, they landed and flew a C-130 off the Forrestal as a test and the C-130 has the same wingspan as the Triton.  Most likely, the Triton would need to have an upgrade due to the fact it needs to be able to be launched off the deck and that's nontrivial.  However, between an orbit of Tritons (long distance, long endurance) and the dispersed capability of the TERN (medium endurance and distance) launched from the destroyers, cruisers and frigates, the ISR role is more than taken care of.  In fact, there ought to be a 24/7 ISR patrol if there are 5 Tritons and two TERNs per surface ship (meaning 8 per carrier battle group) of a Triton and two TERNs.


If that is the case, then the UCLASS ought to be a strike asset which can carry an ISR payload if necessary, but its main emphasis ought to be penetration and strike.  In that case, I'd guess that would mean something along the lines of Boeing, Northrop or Lockheed's designs.  The UCLASS strike asset then becomes useful for 'first day' or high risk operations.  If that is the case, a wing of 12 UCLASS would probably be appropriate.



However, in the articles I've seen on the FA-XX, the navy has expressed a desire for a F-14 replacement.  The F-14's role was as a fleet defense fighter or interceptor to prevent Soviet bombers from taking out the carrier battle group.  While the F/A-18E/F has semi filled this role since the F-14's retirement, it has a shorter combat radius (390 nm vs 500 nm) and lower maximum speed (mach 1.8 vs mach 2.34).  No drone currently being considered under the UCLASS would have the speed of either the F/A-18E or the F-14, but it actually has a longer range (18+ hours at 400 mph, there and back again is 3600 miles for an Avenger).  So that makes you wonder...could you take one of the UCLASS proposals and turn it into a Fleet Defense Fighter?



Let's take the public stats of General Atomics' Avenger Tail #2.  Tail #2 is supposed to have an internal weapons bay capacity of 1,600 kg (which we'll skip for now) and an external capability on 6 hard points of 2,900 kg.  We'll work with the external mount points first. 

As an aside, for the moment, we are going to ignore the fact you will have to do some nontrivial upgrades (like an AAW radar at the minimum!) except to acknowledge they need to happen and will have some nontrivial impacts on the aircraft design (bigger engine to produce more power for the radar and other kit which reduces range, payload, etc).

This is an air defense UCAV.  Its meant to shoot down incoming missiles and aircraft beyond the range of the surface ships defense capabilities.  The F-14 carried the Phoenix missile for this role.  This missile, while having excellent speed and range, was a monster in weight and also was retired over a decade ago.  The nearest equivalent is the British Meteor.  While possibly slower than the Phoenix, the Meteor is far, far lighter at less than half the weight.  Assuming we can mount more than one missile per external hard point, we can easily get a total of 12 Meteors on the Avenger#2.  The weight is 2,220 kg.  We are left with 680 kg: it might be then possible to mount another four AMRAAMs (no, you couldn't quite get 4 more meteors, sorry).  Not that it makes sense to consider it, but you could place 2 Stingers or Starstreak on the two remaining hard points (assuming each hard point could be used as a triple mount).  Unfortunately, 2 Sidewinders are too heavy (each is 85 kg and left over total is 72 kg...doh).

Just with this alone, you've outgunned the F-14 (at most 6 Phoenix or 4 Phoenix and 2 AMRAAM and 2 Sidewinders) or the F/A-18E/F (4 AMRAAM and 2 Sidewinders).  Here we have 12 Meteors and 4 AMRAAMs: the missile firepower of almost 3 F-14s.  However, we're not done: we have the internal weapons bay left and 1,600 kg.

In terms of mass, you could run off and do another 8 Meteors, but in terms of volume, probably not.  I am going to suggest you do not want to 'waste' this weight with missiles.  Rather, DARPA is already planning on doing a test with General Atomics which points the way for how to use the internal weapons bay.  You put a HELLADS into it.  A what?  A Laser.  A 150 kilowatt laser.

General Atomics is already planning on putting their HELLADS laser on one of the Avenger UCAVs in 2018.  Lasers have a really, really cheap 'bullets' (ie cost per shot).  They also cannot be dodged and despite the popular sentiment you only need to mirror surface a munition, keeping it clean so that works is almost impossible.

Why use a laser?  Consider.

Place your Fleet Defense Avenger at 8,230 m (27,000 ft) at 160 km (100 mi) from the carrier between the carrier and the threat.  The distance to the horizon is 324 km (~202 mi) and theoretically, that's your engagement range.  Let's assume China or Russia have developed a kick ass, hypersonic antiship missile which flies at Mach 10 and flies almost at torpedo heights.  The Avenger will have a total engagement time before the missile passes the Avenger is 100 seconds and from the Avenger to the carrier is 50 seconds.  If it takes 20 seconds (average, pessimistically) to bag a missile with a laser, then the Avenger will take down seven with the laser and 12 with the Meteors and four with the AMRAAMs (optimistically).

The reality is modern antiship missiles have a max speed of around Mach 5.  Therefore half that of the kick ass ASM described above.  That brings the total kills from the laser now up to 15.  If you are assuming a 3M-54 Klub, then it flies at Mach .8 for most of its range and then speeds up when close the target.  Assuming 'close' means 50 km, then even before the Klubs pass the Avenger, the laser will have bagged over 67 missiles: the Klub would be obsolete, really, under these circumstances.

The immediate reaction might be to argue to replace the missiles on our Avenger with more lasers.  First of all, it will cause other problems (power generation will probably be insufficient) and if the weather is too poor, the laser will not work as well and may be constrained to four or less kills.  It is best to hedge the bets then with the laser and missiles on our Fleet Defense Avenger.

At any rate, a single FD Avenger, as a Fleet Defense Fighter/Interceptor then has the kill capability of 3 F-14s (assuming 6 Phoenix per F-14).  Now for the moment, let's assume the FD Avenger is deployed in the same numbers as the F-14 Tomcat used to be: 14 per carrier.  The equivalent potential kills would be as much as 42 Tomcats.  For fleet defense, that's excellent.  Furthermore, they can stay in the air on patrol for far, far longer than an F-14: 3x as much each.

Note, our FD Avengers are not air superiority fighters and cannot engage in dogfights or what have you.  They are meant for fleet defense, which is a very different role.  They also cannot jump to Mach 2.3 and go hunting on the other side of the fleet formation.  They are moved into position and then stay on station.  They are not interceptors in the traditional sense.








 


So, what does our carrier air wing look like?  Given Carrier Tritons, UCLASS and the FD Avenger?

The assumption is we'd still have 5 E-2x as our AWACS (etc).

There are 'now' 5 Tritons for ISR.

We would have 10 strike UCLASS.

There would be 14 FD Avengers. 

There would be 6 F-18G Growlers.

That would leave us with 20 F-35c and 24 F/A-18E/F (or FA-XX, later).

There would be a total of 6 SH-60 Seahawk for search and rescue and/or antisub work.


The 'nice' thing about the airwing above is it can potentially be put onto the carrier decks far faster than what will likely happen with the FA-XX.  Theoretically, you could squeeze in another 10 aircraft, especially if the total personnel and deck space for the drones than manned aircraft, but the aircraft carrier might pop like a balloon then from being overfull.


So, a mini crazy thought: use the Triton for ISR from the carrier and two different UCLASS for the separate missions of deep strike and fleet defense.

General Atomics 50 kilowatt Laser Passes Beam Quality Test, to be Tested in Avenger UCAV in 2018


The Gen 3 High Energy Laser System (HEL) from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. completed beam quality and power measurements of G using the Joint Technology Office (JTO) Government Diagnostic System (GDS). The testing was performed by an independent measurement team under contract to the U.S. Government.

The new laser is representative of the third generation of technology first developed under the High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS, Gen 1) program. This Gen 3 Laser has a number of upgrades that provide improved beam quality, increased electrical to optical efficiency, and reduced size and weight. The recently certified Gen 3 laser assembly is small at only 1.3 x 0.4 x 0.5 meters. The system itself is powered by a compact Lithium-ion battery supply created to demonstrate a deployable architecture for tactical platforms.

GA-ASI is looking to use the laser weapon module in the Predator C Avenger for deployment by 2018.

The Gen 3 HEL tested is a unit cell for the Tactical Laser Weapon Module (TLWM) that is currently under development. The TLWM is built for use on land, sea, and airborne platforms and will be available in four versions at the 50, 75, 150, and 300 kilowatt laser output levels.

While UCLASS Competitors Wait for RFP Release, General Atomics Starts Production on Avenger UCAV for US Air Force


Boeing and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) are working on flyable demonstrators in support of their Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (Uclass) bids, according to industry officials. Boeing is not commenting on its Uclass work, but GA-ASI's candidate for the slow-gelling U.S. Navy requirement is a larger version of its jet-powered Avenger—which, under another previously undisclosed program, is in low-rate production for the U.S. Air Force. Both are expected to be flying by 2015.

One of the other Uclass contenders, Lockheed Martin, says it has no plans to build a demonstrator. The other, Northrop Grumman, is not disclosing details of its Uclass concepts.
