Authors:Cabreira et alAbstract:Dinosauromorpha includes dinosaurs and other much less diverse dinosaur precursors of Triassic age, such as lagerpetids [1]. Joint occurrences of these taxa with dinosaurs are rare but more common during the latest part of that period (Norian-Rhaetian, 228–201 million years ago [mya]) [2, 3]. In contrast, the new lagerpetid and saurischian dinosaur described here were unearthed from one of the oldest rock units with dinosaur fossils worldwide, the Carnian (237–228 mya) Santa Maria Formation of south Brazil [4], a record only matched in age by much more fragmentary remains from Argentina [5]. This is the first time nearly complete dinosaur and non-dinosaur dinosauromorph remains are found together in the same excavation, clearly showing that these animals were contemporaries since the first stages of dinosaur evolution. The new lagerpetid preserves the first skull, scapular and forelimb elements, plus associated vertebrae, known for the group, revealing how dinosaurs acquired several of their typical anatomical traits. Furthermore, a novel phylogenetic analysis shows the new dinosaur as the most basal Sauropodomorpha. Its plesiomorphic teeth, strictly adapted to faunivory, provide crucial data to infer the feeding behavior of the first dinosaurs.

Ethiopia's Paleoclimate Became Humid, Wetter and Possibly Monsoonal During the Carnian/Norian Triassic
Paleoclimatic records of Late Triassic paleosols from Central Ethiopia

Abstract:
The present study documents the major paleosols types within the Lower Adigrat Sandstone in the Blue Nile Basin of central Ethiopia, with the aim of unraveling the paleoclimatic signatures embedded in them. The paleosols developed within an 80-m-thick siliciclastic succession deposited in a mixed tide- and wave-dominated incised valley estuary during the Late Triassic.
Based on down-profile variations in pedogenic features, three major paleosol types (i.e., types I, II and III) were identified. Type I paleosols dominate the lower part of the section and are interpreted as moderately well-drained argillic Vertisols. The dominant pedogenic process was shrinking and swelling of expandable clays (i.e., smectite) through repeated wetting and drying cycles. The morphologies and the mineralogy of the paleosols provide persuasive evidence for pedogenesis under semi-arid subtropical climatic conditions with pronounced wet-dry seasonality, highly fluctuating soil moisture regime, and deep groundwater table. The presence of a calcic Bk horizon deep in the profiles is consistent with elevated soil moisture deficits and low to moderate mean annual precipitation (MAP). Type II paleosols, interpreted to represent vertic Gleysols, are more common in the middle part of the section. The pervasive gleying reflects poor soil drainage and a shallow groundwater table where the soil is waterlogged most of the year. These paleosols suggest a humid tropical climate characterized by alternating wet-dry seasonality but with more wet months per year. The top of the unit is dominated by type III paleosols that represent gleyed Oxisols, reflecting a more humid equatorial climate marked by wet seasons, elevated annual soil moisture content, and a high water table. The presence of plinthite/laterite is in agreement with a wet equatorial climate characterized by extensive chemical weathering and long periods of landscape stability.
The observed vertical progression in the major paleosol types from Vertsols to Gleysols and Oxisols implies a systematic change in the number of wet months, most probably in response to regional tectonics and long-term climate change. Because the number of wet months is, in part, related to latitude and monsoonal climates, the upward stratigraphic trend in paleosol orders is interpreted to signal the northward or equatorward migration of the Blue Nile Basin and central Ethiopia within Pangea from dry subtropical low-latitudes in the early Late Triassic (Carnian‐Norian) toward the humid, wet equatorial, possibly monsoonal, paleoclimatic zone in the Late Triassic (Norian‐Rhaetian).

The Implications of the Pollen of the Norian/Rhaetian Triassic New Mexico
Palynology of the upper Chinle Formation in northern New Mexico, U.S.A.: Implications for biostratigraphy and terrestrial ecosystem change during the Late Triassic (Norian–Rhaetian)

Abstract:
A new densely sampled palynological record from the vertebrate-bearing upper Chinle Formation at Ghost Ranch in the Chama Basin of northwestern New Mexico provides insights into the biostratigraphy and terrestrial ecosystem changes during the Late Triassic of northwestern Pangaea. Spore-pollen assemblages from the Poleo Sandstone, Petrified Forest, and 'siltstone' members are dominated by pollen of corystospermous seed ferns (Alisporites) and voltziacean conifers (Enzonalasporites, Patinasporites). Other abundant taxa include Klausipollenites gouldii and the enigmatic fused tetrad Froelichsporites traversei, whereas spores of ferns and fern allies are generally rare. The assemblages are correlated with Zone III Chinle palynofloras of previous authors. The lower assemblages contain rare occurrences of typical Zone II taxa, namely Cycadopites stonei, Equisetosporites chinleanus and Lagenella martini, that may either be reworked or represent relictual floral elements. Marked step-wise losses of species richness, along with only minor appearances of new taxa, led to a total 50% drop in range-through diversity during the late Norian of the Chama Basin. Correlations with other Chinle records in the western U.S. reveal differences in the stratigraphic ranges of some spore-pollen taxa, likely attributable to local/regional differences in environmental conditions, such as groundwater availability, precipitation, nutrients, and temperature, rather than stratigraphic miscorrelation. This is interpreted as a consequence of environmental stress resulting from increased aridity coincident with the northward movement of Pangaea. Similarly, major differences between the western and eastern U.S. and northwest Europe can be attributed to floral provincialism governed by climatic zones during the Late Triassic.

Xenoxylon junggarensis: a new Gymnosperm From Norian Triassic China Growth Limited by Light?

A permineralized gymnospermous wood, Xenoxylon junggarensis sp. nov., is described from the Norian (upper Triassic) Huangshanjie Formation in Dalongkou Section, Jimsar County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwestern China. The pycnoxylic wood consists of thick-walled tracheids and thin-walled rays. It is characterized by commonly rounded to very compressed, contiguous or sometimes separated uniseriate, occasionally rounded and alternate biseriate radial pits and one or two simple, large pits in each cross-field.. The fossil wood genus Xenoxylon Gothan is known to be an indicator of cooler and/or wetter climates in the boreal hemisphere during the Mesozoic. Its occurrence in the Huangshanjie Formation from Junggar Basin, together with the palaeobotanical and palynological data, indicates that a wet and temperate climate prevailed in the northern Xinjiang during the Norian interval. The mean sensitivity of analysis of 22 growth rings is 0.36, suggesting a seasonal response to climate. Growth rings in the fossil woods are large (2.3 mm average with a maximum of 5.44 mm), representing either a longer growing season or more favorable conditions for growth, including readily available water and higher temperature. Based on a considerable amount of earlywood and a small percentage of latewood and some indirect evidence, it is hypothesized that growth of X. junggarensis in the high-latitude Junggar Basin in the late Triassic was limited by light levels.

Carnian/Norian Boundary Environmental Changes Were NOT Caused by Methane Hydrates or Volcanic Eruptions

Abstract:
The Black Bear Ridge section in northeastern British Columbia, Canada, consists of a continuously exposed sequence of Upper Carnian through Lower Norian (Upper Triassic) continental margin strata. The section has been proposed as a candidate Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the Carnian/Norian boundary (CNB). In order to assess Late Carnian to Early Norian environmental changes recorded in the section, we examined stratigraphic variations in 87Sr/86Sr, δ13C, and δ18O values, and also values of redox sensitive elements (V, Ni and Cr), in the CNB interval. The study section is located along the north shore of Williston Lake, northeastern British Columbia. The Black Bear Ridge section was deposited in a distal ramp environment on the passive western margin of the North American craton.
The strata across the CNB display a positive shift in δ13C values and a corresponding increase in the redox indices V/(V + Ni) and V/Cr. The synchronous increase in δ13C values and redox indices suggests that burial rates of marine organic carbon increased in response to the development of anoxic conditions in the water column. An increase in δ13C values in carbonate rocks across the CNB has also been reported from Upper Triassic sections in the western Tethys (e.g., in the Pizzo Mondello section, Sicily), which suggests that the development of anoxic conditions within the CNB interval was widespread, affecting both the Panthalassan Ocean and Tethyan Sea. The geochemical data from this study, as well as from research into conodont biostratigraphy in the Black Bear Ridge section, show that the onset of oceanic anoxic conditions may have been responsible for the faunal turnover event at the CNB. The cause of this anoxic event is unknown, but the 87Sr/86Sr and δ13C isotope data largely exclude the possibility that the event was triggered by dissociation of methane hydrates and degassing related to large-scale volcanic activity.

Mesozoic strata are well developed and exposed continuously across the Sichuan Basin, South China. In particular, the Upper Triassic strata yield diverse and abundant spore-pollen fossils, providing a significant reference for the study of palaeoenvironmental variations across the Triassic–Jurassic transition where mass extinctions were occurring. In this paper, we summarize the major progress on Late Triassic palynological studies in this basin. To date, 151 genera (454 species) of sporomorph fossils have been reported from the Late Triassic strata in the Sichuan Basin. Three palynological assemblages are distinguished for the Late Triassic in the Sichuan Basin. Late Triassic vegetation in the Sichuan Basin shows a remarkable predominance of ferns, followed by conifers and cycads/ginkgophytes, and conifers show a distinct increase in abundance in the latest Triassic. In general, the Late Triassic palaeoclimate in the Sichuan Basin was tropical-subtropical, humid and warm. A synthesis of the data shows that the Late Triassic did not have a constant paleoclimate in the Sichuan Basin, several climatic events are recognized: two warm and humid climate events in Norian-Rhaetian time, coupled with a cooler and drier condition in the latest Late Triassic. Further investigations in higher resolution at more continuous sections in the Sichuan Basin are needed to better understand the Late Triassic vegetation response, climate changes, as well as palaeoecosystem variations across the Triassic–Jurassic boundary.

The Unstable Paleoenvironmental Reasons why Dionsaurs Didn't Dominate the Late Triassic Tropics

A major unresolved aspect of the rise of dinosaurs is why early dinosaurs and their relatives were rare and species-poor at low paleolatitudes throughout the Late Triassic Period, a pattern persisting 30 million years after their origin and 10–15 million years after they became abundant and speciose at higher latitudes. New palynological, wildfire, organic carbon isotope, and atmospheric pCO2 data from early dinosaur-bearing strata of low paleolatitudes in western North America show that large, high-frequency, tightly correlated variations in δ13Corg and palynomorph ecotypes occurred within a context of elevated and increasing pCO2 and pervasive wildfires. Whereas pseudosuchian archosaur-dominated communities were able to persist in these same regions under rapidly fluctuating extreme climatic conditions until the end-Triassic, large-bodied, fast-growing tachymetabolic dinosaurian herbivores requiring greater resources were unable to adapt to unstable high CO2 environmental conditions of the Late Triassic.

Coprolites of Late Triassic carnivorous vertebrates from Poland: An integrative approach

Abstract:
Vertebrate coprolites derived from Upper Triassic terrestrial deposits of southern Poland have been subjected to various analytical methods in order to retrieve information about their composition, producer’s diet and nature of the microscopic structures preserved in the groundmass. Morphologically, the coprolites have been classified into four morphotypes, of which only three were further analysed due to their good state of preservation. Their groundmass are composed of francolite, a carbonate-rich apatite, in which abundant coccoid structures are preserved. Based on various microscopic and organic geochemical techniques, they are interpreted as fossilized bacteria which could have mediated the phosphatization of the faeces. The thin sectioning revealed that the coprolites consist of those containing exclusively bone remains, and those preserving both bone and plant remains. Those coprolites preserving only vertebrate remains are suggestive for exclusive carnivorous diet of the producers. However, the interpretation of coprolites consisting of both vertebrate and plant remains is more debatable. Although they may attest to omnivory, it cannot be excluded that potential producers were carnivorous and occasionally ingested plants, or accidentally swallowed plant material during feeding. The latter may involve predation or scavenging upon other herbivorous animals. The potential producers may have been animals that foraged in or near aquatic habitats, such as semi-aquatic archosaurs and/or temnospondyls. This is supported by the presence of ostracode and other aquatic arthropod remains, and fish scales within the coprolites, as well as by the presence of specific biomarkers such as phytanic and pristanic acids, which are characteristic constituents of fish oil. The preservation of such labile organic compounds as sterols, palmitin, stearin or levoglucosan attests for rapid, microbially-mediated mineralization of the faeces at very early stages of diagenesis.

A new Norian/Rhaetian Triassic Vertebrate Assemblage from Argentina
A NEW LATE TRIASSIC VERTEBRATE ASSEMBLAGE FROM NORTHWESTERN ARGENTINA

Abstract:
The Quebrada del Barro Formation (QBF) is part of the continental Marayes-El Carrizal Basin, in NW Argentina. Here we report a diverse faunal assemblage recently discovered at the Quebrada del Barro Formation, along with a preliminary discussion of the taxonomic status and affinities of numerous vertebrate specimens found at two localities of this unit. The new vertebrate association includes remains of at least 12 different new species related to six major vertebrate groups: Cynodontia, Testudinata, Sphenodontia, Pseudosuchia, Pterosauria, and Dinosauromorpha. The most abundant specimens in this faunal assemblage are opisthodontian sphenodonts, tritheledontid cynodonts and basal sauropodomorph dinosaurs, but the assemblage also includes diagnostic remains of lagerpetid dinosauromorphs, theropods, pterosaurs, basal crocodylomorphs, and stem testudinatans. Several of these groups have also been reported for the Los Colorados Formation (LCF), although the two units differ in their taxonomic content at the species level and in the relative abundance of different taxonomic groups. A comparison of these two faunal assemblage suggest the fauna of QBF is younger than that of LCF and we tentatively assess a late Norian–Rhaetian age for the QBF. Some of the specimens reported here are known from well-preserved specimens and contain important new information for understanding the evolution of these groups, which underscores the relevance of the QBF fauna for assessing the dynamics of the major groups of vertebrates that dominated the terrestrial ecosystems during the early Mesozoic in Pangea.

Metoposaurus algarvensis: A new, Giant Metoposaur Temnospondyl From Norian Triassic Portugal
A new species of Metoposaurus from the Late Triassic of Portugal and comments on the systematics and biogeography of metoposaurid temnospondyls

Abstract:
Metoposaurids are a group of temnospondyl amphibians that filled crocodile-like predatory niches in fluvial and lacustrine environments during the Late Triassic. Metoposaurids are common in the Upper Triassic sediments of North Africa, Europe, India, and North America, but many questions about their systematics and phylogeny remain unresolved. We here erect Metoposaurus algarvensis, sp. nov., the first Metoposaurus species from the Iberian Peninsula, based on several new specimens from a Late Triassic bonebed in Algarve, southern Portugal. We describe the cranial and pectoral anatomy of M. algarvensis and compare it with other metoposaurids (particularly other specimens of Metoposaurus from Germany and Poland). We provide a revised diagnosis and species-level taxonomy for the genus Metoposaurus, which is currently represented with certainty by three European species (M. diagnosticus, M. krasiejowensis, M. algarvensis). We also identify cranial characters that differentiate these three species, and may have phylogenetic significance. These include features of the braincase and mandible, which indicate that metoposaurid skulls are more variable than previously thought. The new Portuguese bonebed provides further evidence that metoposaurids congregated in fluvial and lacustrine settings across their geographic range and often succumbed to mass death events. We provide an updated paleogeographic map depicting all known metoposaurid occurrences, which shows that these temnospondyls were globally distributed in low latitudes during the Late Triassic and had a similar, but not identical, paleogeographic range as phytosaurs.

Carnufex carolinensis: a new Bipedal Crocodylomorph From Carnian Triassic North Carolina
Early crocodylomorph increases top tier predator diversity during rise of dinosaurs

Abstract:
Triassic predatory guild evolution reflects a period of ecological flux spurred by the catastrophic end-Permian mass extinction and terminating with the global ecological dominance of dinosaurs in the early Jurassic. In responding to this dynamic ecospace, terrestrial predator diversity attained new levels, prompting unique trophic webs with a seeming overabundance of carnivorous taxa and the evolution of entirely new predatory clades. Key among these was Crocodylomorpha, the largest living reptiles and only one of two archosaurian lineages that survive to the present day. In contrast to their existing role as top, semi-aquatic predators, the earliest crocodylomorphs were generally small-bodied, terrestrial faunivores, occupying subsidiary (meso) predator roles. Here we describe Carnufex carolinensis a new, unexpectedly large-bodied taxon with a slender and ornamented skull from the Carnian Pekin Formation (~231 Ma), representing one of the oldest and earliest diverging crocodylomorphs described to date. Carnufex bridges a problematic gap in the early evolution of pseudosuchians by spanning key transitions in bauplan evolution and body mass near the origin of Crocodylomorpha. With a skull length of greater than 50 cm, the new taxon documents a rare instance of crocodylomorphs ascending to top-tier predator guilds in the equatorial regions of Pangea prior to the dominance of dinosaurs.

Archosauromorph Tanystropheids From Norian Triassic New Mexico
Late Triassic tanystropheids (Reptilia, Archosauromorpha) from northern New Mexico (Petrified Forest Member, Chinle Formation) and the biogeography, functional morphology, and evolution of Tanystropheidae

Abstract:
We report on tanystropheids from the Late Triassic (middle Norian) Hayden Quarry of northern New Mexico (Chinle Formation, Hayden Quarry). These elements, consisting of isolated vertebrae and appendicular bones, represent the first unambiguously identified tanystropheid from western North America and likely the latest occurrence of the group, postdating Tanytrachelos in the eastern United States. A new phylogenetic analysis of early saurians identifies synapomorphies of tanystropheid subclades, which are recognized in the recovered vertebrae and a calcaneum. The femora are consistent with referral to Tanystropheidae. There is no clear association of the remains, however, so we refrain from erecting a new taxon. The analysis also indicates that the Hayden Quarry tanystropheid fossils belong to a newly recognized clade including the Late Triassic taxa Langobardisaurus and Tanytrachelos. Because most tanystropheid specimens are two-dimensionally crushed skeletons, the Hayden Quarry tanystropheid fossils provide valuable insights into the three-dimensional osteology of derived tanystropheids. The most striking feature of the Hayden vertebrae is a rugose, flattened expansion of the neural spines in the dorsal, sacral, and caudal regions, probably linked to a ligamentous bracing system. These fossils and others from Late Triassic sites in the American West suggest that tanystropheids underwent a previously unrecognized radiation in North America just prior to their extinction.

Wachholz: a new Norian Triassic Fossilierous Site in Brazil
Wachholz, a new exquisite dinosaur-bearing fossiliferous site from the Upper Triassic of southern Brazil

Abstract:
The present contribution reports a new fossiliferous site from the Caturrita Formation (Upper Triassic of Paraná Basin, Southern Brazil), which yields articulate, complete, associated, and exceptionally well-preserved dinosaur specimens, together with the sole occurrence of an isolated tooth ascribed to a carnivore indetermined archosauriform. These specimens increase the sauropodomorph record from this geological unit. A preliminary evaluation of such specimens suggests that sauropodomorph dinosaurs could have been more abundant in Norian Faunas from southern Brazil, considering the increased sampling here reported. So far, about six specimens are previously recognized (disregarding Guaibasaurus) from the Caturrita Formation, and here we add four specimens, or even five if consider an additional autopodium. Also, the morphology of the isolated carnivorous-type tooth differs from other described carnivorous archosauriform teeth from the Caturrita Formation. Hence, it might represent a still undescribed taxon. Further studies of these specimens will certainly provide new data regarding biostratigraphy, phylogeny, paleoecology, and taphonomy, as this new fossiliferous locality preserves one of the most representative dinosaur records from the Norian worldwide.

Gorgetosuchus pekinensis: a new Basal Desmatosuchine Aetosaur From Norian Triassic North Carolina
A new aetosaur (Archosauria, Suchia) from the Upper Triassic Pekin Formation, Deep River Basin, North Carolina, U.S.A., and its implications for early aetosaur evolution

Aetosaurs are an extinct clade of quadrupedal, heavily armored archosaurs that had a worldwide distribution during the Late Triassic. Aetosaur fossils from the Upper Triassic Pekin Formation in the Deep River Basin of North Carolina (U.S.A.) consist primarily of isolated osteoderms and, rarely, more associated material. Here we describe a new genus and species, Gorgetosuchus pekinensis, based on an associated incomplete anterior carapace, consisting of a total of 19 nearly complete paramedian and lateral osteoderms from the first 10 rows of armor as well as some associated fragments. An important feature of Gorgetosuchus is that an articulated fifth row of cervical osteoderms almost encloses the neck, with prominent spines on both the dorsal and lateral osteoderms. This is a novel configuration among aetosaurs. Otherwise, NCSM 21723 preserves a mosaic of character states found in Longosuchus, Lucasuchus, or both taxa while simultaneously preserving several more plesiomorphic character states, such as cervical osteoderms that are wider than long. Our reevaluation of other Pekin Formation specimens that various authors have assigned to Desmatosuchus, Longosuchus, or Lucasuchus confirms that some possess characteristics of Lucasuchus, whereas others are not generically determinate. Incorporating Gorgetosuchus into existing phylogenies of aetosaurs results in a reshuffling of basal aetosaur relationships, but a variety of analyses consistently place Gorgetosuchus as a basal desmatosuchine. Using current taxonomic practices, there are at least three aetosaur genera in the Pekin Formation: Lucasuchus, Coahomasuchus, and Gorgetosuchus.

Transitional Fossil Molar Tooth From Morganucodont Mammaliaform Hallautherium Found From Norian/Rhaetian Triassic Poland

Abstract:
Recent Triassic discoveries have extended the record of near-mammals (Mammaliaformes) back to the Norian, about 215 Ma, and reveal a significant diversity of Late Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) forms. We now add to this Late Triassic diversity a nearly complete double-rooted right lower molariform tooth (ZPAL V.33/734) from the Polish Upper Triassic that is significant because it comes from uppermost Norian–lower Rhaetian rocks and is the first discovery of a mammal-like tooth in the Mesozoic of Poland. The described tooth shows transitional dental morphology between advanced cynodonts and mammaliaforms and it appears to represent a basal mammaliaform (genus Hallautherium), probably belonging to Morganucodonta.

Abstract:
Psephoderma alpinum is an armoured, durophagous placodont known from the alpine Late Triassic. Here we present a new, well-preserved isolated skull discovered in the Alplihorn Member (Late Norian–Early Rhaetian) of the Kössen Formation, Schesaplana Mountain, which straddles the Swiss/Austrian border. Micro-computed tomographic (µCT) scanning was used to create an accurate osteological reconstruction of the specimen, the first time this has been conducted for Psephoderma. We thus clarify disputed anatomical features from previous descriptions, such as a lack of a lacrimal and a pineal foramen that is enclosed by the parietal. We also present the first description based on µCT data of the lateral braincase wall, sphenoid region and some cranial nerve canals for Psephoderma, with the location of the hypophyseal seat, cerebral carotid foramina, dorsum sellae, prootic foramen, lacrimal foramen, as well as all dental foramina being described. This specimen represents the first skull of Psephoderma recovered in Switzerland, and features such as poorly-sutured braincase elements and its relatively small size compared to other known specimens may indicate that it was a sub-adult.

Venaticosuchus rusconii: a Carnian/Norian Triassic Pseudosuchian Archosaur Revisited

Abstract:
Ornithosuchidae is a group of Late Triassic pseudosuchian archosaurs of controversial phylogenetic affinities. This clade currently comprises three taxa: Venaticosuchus rusconii and Riojasuchus tenuisceps, both from Argentina, and Ornithosuchus longidens, from Scotland. V. rusconii was erected on the basis of an incomplete skull with articulated lower jaws and some elements of the postcranium that are currently lost. Venaticosuchus rusconii is redescribed here and included for the first time in a phylogenetic analysis to test its affinities with ornithosuchids. The bizarre morphology of V. rusconii has a unique combination of traits that distinguishes it from the other ornithosuchids, such as basipterygoid processes directed ventrally, dentary with the dorsal margin of the anterior end dorsally expanded, articular without a foramen on its medial side, and the absence of a surangular foramen, corroborating the validity of this taxon. V. rusconii is recovered as an ornithosuchid more closely related to R. tenuisceps than to O. longidens, based on the presence of a nearly pointed anterior margin of the antorbital fenestra, and a vertical bony strut of the jugal that separates the antorbital fenestra from the infratemporal fenestra.

In 1950, the partial skeleton of a large vertebrate was discovered in the western Brooks Range of Alaska by a team of geologists mapping the U.S. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 (now National Petroleum Reserve—Alaska). Because the preserved portion of the specimen was large (approximately 4 m in length) and found in an extremely remote location (Fig. 1), it was not collected at the time of discovery, although the site was subsequently revisited at later dates by geologists familiar with the find. A brief note mentioning the skeleton and its probable age was published 23 years later (Tailleur et al., 1973); however, the identity of the skeleton as an ichthyosaur, though suspected, was equivocal. In 2002, the specimen was relocated and collected by a team from the University of Alaska Museum, where it is now housed.

Carnian/Norian Triassic Boundary Succession in Nevada at Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park

Abstract:
The Upper Carnian-Lower Norian (Upper Triassic) Luning Formation at Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park (BISP) in central NV (USA) has been sampled using for the first time the bed-by-bed approach for ammonoids, pelagic bivalves, and conodonts, more than 60 years after its first description by Silberling (U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 322: 1–63, 1959). BISP is historically important for the definition of the uppermost Carnian of the North American Triassic chronostratigraphic scale and is known worldwide as one of the most important ichthyosaur Fossil-Lagerstätte because of its extraordinary record of 37 articulated, large-sized specimens of Shonisaurus popularis. Nearly 190 ammonoids were collected from two stratigraphic sections, documenting all the latest Carnian to Early Norian ammonoid faunas previously described by Silberling. Halobiids were collected from five levels, and the first report of conodonts from BISP includes faunas from 13 levels. The ~340-m thick Brick Pile section, the most complete in the study area, includes the uppermost Carnian Macrolobatus Zone, which provides conodont faunas of the lower primitia zone and Halobia septentrionalis. The 200-m thick lowermost Norian Kerri Zone, which begins 52 m above the Macrolobatus Zone, yields conodonts of the upper primitia zone in its lower part, together with H. cf. beyrichi and H. cf. selwyni. The ichthyosaur-bearing interval, whose stratigraphic position has been interpreted quite differently by previous authors, is documented in the uppermost Carnian Macrolobatus Zone and is characterized by rich Tropites-dominated ammonoid faunas and by the onset of Halobia. All models proposed by various workers to explain the unusual ichthyosaur record are discussed and an additional explanation for the main ichthyosaur-bearing bed is proposed. The new hypothesis is that a harmful algal bloom (HAB) may have been the trigger for the mass mortality recorded in this level. Although the C/N boundary in the Brick Pile section lies within a 52 m interval that presently lacks paleontologic data, this succession is included in a small group of sections that are expected to contribute to the definition of the GSSP of the Norian stage. Correlation of the Brick Pile section with the best Carnian/Norian sections in northeastern British Columbia is discussed. Compared to the British Columbia Juvavites Cove and the GSSP candidate Black Bear Ridge sections, the Brick Pile section exhibits an ammonoid and Halobia record that is slightly more similar to that of the Tethyan sections. Correlation of the Brick Pile section with the second GSSP candidate Pizzo Mondello (Sicily, Italy) well demonstrates the significant problems encountered in calibration of the Tethyan and North American scales.

Abstract:
Originally identified as an ornithisichian dinosaur, Crosbysaurus has been found in New Mexico, Arizona, and the type locality in Texas, the genus has been reassessed by other workers in light of revelations about the postcrania of another putative Triassic ornithischian, Revueltosaurus. The understanding of Triassic dental faunas has become more complicated by the extreme convergence between pseudosuchian archosaurus and ornithichian dinosaur dental morphologies. This new specimen does not help resolve the affinities of Crosbysaurus but does extend the range of this taxon into southern Utah. This specimen may also represent the youngest-known member of this genus
