Pakistan has Tested a Nuclear Capable Submarine Launched Cruise Missile

Pakistan announced Thursday that it had successfully conducted another test-firing of a nuclear-capable, submarine-launched cruise missile (SLCM), which has a range of 450 kilometers.

The indigenously developed Babur missile was fired from an underwater platform and “engaged its target with precise accuracy,” a military statement said.

The rocket is capable of delivering “various types of payloads” and provides Pakistan a “credible” second-strike capability.

Military spokesman Major-General Asif Ghafoor, while referring to the country’s archrival India, said the development of Babur was a response to “provocative nuclear strategies and posture being pursued in the neighborhood.” He also released some footage of the testing.

Pakistan said its nuclear and missile development programs are India-specific and have effectively deterred the bigger neighbor, with its larger military power, from imposing another war on the country.

Should Russia be Worried? China Makes Alliance With Pakistan, Afghanistan & Tajikistan

China is to set up an anti-terrorism alliance with Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, state media said on Thursday, as it seeks to boost coordination with neighbors to tackle what it says is a growing domestic militant threat.

Fang Fenghui, a member of the powerful Central Military Commission which controls China's armed forces, hosted a meeting with his counterparts on Wednesday in Urumqi, capital of the western Xinjiang region, where officials say they are battling Islamist militants.

The four countries recognized the serious threat of terrorism and extremism to regional stability, the official Xinhua news agency said, and they agreed to set up a "four-country mechanism" for intelligence sharing and training.

"All parties reaffirmed they will cooperate to respond to these forces, and safeguard all member countries' peace and stability," Xinhua said.

Sri Lanka Buys 8 JF-17

Pakistan to sell eight combat JF-17 Thunder aircraft to Sri Lanka under an agreement signed during Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit on Tuesday.

The multi-roll fighter aircraft is the joint production of Pakistan and China.

Defence officials accompanying the prime minister said that both countries signed eight agreements related to defence, security, anti-terrorism, trade and science and technology and Pakistan would provide eight JF-17 fighter jets to Sri Lanka at the first phase.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena were present at the ceremony of signing agreements.

Speaking on the occasion, Nawaz said that Pakistan was ready to give Sri Lanka the most favoured nation (MFN) status in trade. He said that there were vast opportunities for bilateral trade and its quantum should be taken to one billion dollars annually.

He said that Pakistan was cooperating with Sri Lanka in defence sector and the two countries would work together to choke financial assistance to terrorists. After Myanmar Deal for JF-17, Pakistan Pushes for Sri Lanka as Second Customer

Following the first export deal for its JF-17 multirole fighter to Myanmar, Pakistan is expected to be pushing hard for a follow-up agreement with Sri Lanka that would mark an important step in further extending its defence co-operation footprint in the Indian Ocean region.

With Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif scheduled to visit Sri Lanka in the first week of January 2016, efforts to secure an agreement in principle for the sale of the JF-17 Thunder - a third-generation fighter co-produced by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China's Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC) - are likely to be high on his agenda, diplomatic sources have told IHS Jane's .

Sharif's upcoming talks in Colombo follow a mid-November visit to Pakistan by Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) commander Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinhala during which the JF-17 was showcased by the Pakistanis. Immediately after the visit AM Bulathsinhala was invited to send an evaluation team of technicians and pilots to PAC's Kamra facilities near Islamabad, where the JF-17 is produced.

Malaysia Interested in Sino-Pakistani JF-17 Fighter. Or not.

Malaysia is considering as one of the option to purchase JF-17 Thunder fighter jets from Pakistan and a deal will be finalised between the two countries after completing required formalities.

Malaysian High Commissioner to Pakistan Dr Hasrul Sani said his country wanted to purchase JF-17 Thunder from Pakistan. “Pakistan and Malaysia are enjoying excellent relations in defence as a result of a joint committee which played role as an active forum,” he said.

He said that this jet fighter was considered an excellent production of Pakistan in the defence sector and a decision about numbers would be taken very soon by the Malaysian government. He expressed his satisfaction over Pakistan-Malaysia bilateral relations and said that both the countries were enjoying cordial and fraternal bilateral relations especially in trade, economy and defence.

Russia's Most Syrian Adventure #56

It appears Russia is using an airbase in Iran.

Russia has hit another 212 targets in the last 24 hours.

Putin has stated there's no chance of improving ties with Turkey.

With his classic ambiguity, Putin declared he's unsure whether Russia needs a permanent base in Syria.  Just like there were no Russian troops in Ukraine.  Oh, wait.

He has also made it clear no outside force should decide whether Assad stays or goes.

Putin also claimed to be backing the Free Syrian Army against IS.  The FSA claims this is false.

The Saudis put together a coalition.  Its purpose is a little unclear.  Officially, it is to fight terrorism.  Pakistan has called it an Islamic military alliance and confirmed it is a participant.  Putin doesn't see the alliance as hostile.

Lavrov and Kerry apparently continue to consult over Syria.  There have been rumors Kerry may be conceding on Assad staying in power.

Saudi Arabia Forms 34 Nation Coalition to Fight Terrorism.

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday announced the formation of a 34-state Islamic military coalition to combat terrorism, according to a joint statement published on state news agency SPA.

"The countries here mentioned have decided on the formation of a military alliance led by Saudi Arabia to fight terrorism, with a joint operations center based in Riyadh to coordinate and support military operations," the statement said.

A long list of Arab countries such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, together with Islamic countries Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan and Gulf Arab and African states were mentioned.

The announcement cited "a duty to protect the Islamic nation from the evils of all terrorist groups and organizations whatever their sect and name which wreak death and corruption on earth and aim to terrorize the innocent."

Could this become a military alliance?

Pakistan Claims First Foreign Customer for JF-17 Fighter, Possibly Nigeria

Kamra-based Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) is staying tight-lipped on the identity of the first international customer for its JF-17 Thunder fighter, but says marketing efforts for the single-engined type are going well.

“The contract is already signed, but we will leave it to the customer to announce it first,” says Air Marshal Javaid Ahmed. “There is a lot of interest in developing countries. I think almost all developing countries are keen to have a look at the JF-17.”

Alternate History Crazy Thought: "Next Year in Nauvoo!"

James wrote a review of a book which in turn got me thinking because he mentioned the Utah War. This was the clash between Mormons in Utah under Brigham Young vs the Buchanan administration in DC, which little actual fighting took place and there were few deaths for something of an armed conflict of the time, save for the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

One of the contingencies Young planned was to move the Mormon community north on yet another exodus.  In this case, the plan was actually for the island of Vancouver.  For the moment, let's assume the US government has decided to rid themselves of these troublesome missionaries and Young triggers the exodus.

Young showing up in British Columbia with more people than would have been in Vancouver until the 1900 would have really alarmed the Brits.  There would be three different possibilities here.

The first is the least likely, IMO, and the border gets scarier in the late 1850s.  However, that's tempered in a big way by the fact the American Civil War was about to go boom.  On the other hand, it might not be after the Civil War since the President Grant tried to exploit the Red River Rebellion and Louis Riel to try to take Manitoba for the US.  On the gripping hand, if the Mormons had been harried out of Utah to Vancouver,  they are not likely to be big fans of America.

The next most likely event is the Mormons becoming fervent Canadians.  The Mormons get the spin of the Loyalist being persecuted by the damned Yanks and get used to anchor the western seaboard from American encroachment.  Vancouver becomes a Canadian Utah and Mormon Zion.

Honestly though, with the reputation the Mormons had and their particular doctrines of the time, its more than likely the Brits are going to see them off.  I'm sorry, chaps, time to move along.  But where to?  After all, the Go West, Young Mormon!  Go West! kinda runs into the end of the continent.  They could go north, but...

Historically, Mormons when proselytizing in Polynesia and the Pacific Ocean islands.  Hawaii is probably the most noted of those missions.  So, harried from Missouri, harried from Utah, harried from Vancouver, the Mormons go West again...to Polynesia, but especially to Micronesia during the American Civil War while the Brits feel they can uproot the weird Americans with less chance of something going wrong.

Missonary work still goes on in Europe and elsewhere, but Zion is now the atolls and islands of Micronesia.  Guam would get a coral block temple and there they would stay for 30 years.  The world would not be done with our ATL Mormons.

The Spanish American War and the Imperial expansion of the Japanese would bring more misery to the ATL Mormons.  The Mormons would attempt to help the Spanish hold off the Americans, and it would have consequences.  The Americans would chase the Mormons from Guam and the Mormons would set up in the surrounding islands.  While already present in many places, they ended up concentrating in the Northern Mariana Islands.

When the Japanese took them in 1914, things did not go well.  Increasingly wondering whether or not the Mormons were a 5th Column for the Americans, the Japanese packed up the lot of them and deported the Mormons to Taiwan at first, emptying the South Pacific Mandate of the potential guerilla army threat.  This is declared a success in 1925.  Once in Taiwan, the Japanese kept them apart in separate, dedicated colonies.  When the Kominka Movement kicked off, it was decided the Mormons were unredeemable and could not be remade into Japanese citizens.  The 60,000 of them were deported to Manchuria to work camps.

They would suffer through the deprivations of WW2 and come out the other side.  Unfortunately, the Chinese Communists, Mao especially, were not overly fond of them.  They were then moved to the Chinese West, Xinjiang, in the early 1950s.  Their numbers were now 50,000.  There they would stay and slow grow over the next 15 years.  Unfortunately, the Cultural Revolution would strike and being the most western (albeit very mixed at this point) group, the Mormons would suffer again.

However, this time the Mormons would make their own move.  The Prophet, Hyriam Hattig, would organize the exodus of the majority of members across the Chinese border into Afghanistan.  In 1968, the Mormons left China.  They would take up farming for a time in the mountains of Afghanistan.  The Afghanis were suspicious but also sympathetic.  At least until 1978.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a disaster.  For the Afghanis, the Soviets and now for the Mormons.  It would kill a number of Mormons.  It would also cause the Great Schism.  The Mormons had finally broken through 100,000 people at the start of the war in their settlements in their valleys.  However, Mormons had become very apolitical and only out for their own survival rather than to change or convert the world.  Most followed the 'render unto Caesar...'  When the communists took over, they rendered until caesar, or at least 75% of them did.  The rest, sick of their being the narrator of the world's dog, moved south, across the Hindu Kush and became the partisans everyone feared they would.  They would even spawn rival Prophets.  Those who moved south became the Abandoned (the Fallen as called by the Wanderers), in the Mormon terminology, and those who remained, the Wanderers (the Lost as called by the Abandoned).

When the Soviet Union began withdrawing from Afghanistan, the Wanderer Mormons pleaded with the Soviets.  Gorbachev took them in and placed them in Crimea.  It did not make them popular with their new neighbors.  However, when the coup came in August 1991, Mormons took it on themselves to free and hide Gorbachev.  It would not stop the fall of the Soviet Union, but it would make the Ukrainians even less fond of them.

They would cross into Europe and Wanderers would become a traveling people in the 1990s making their name a reality.  They would wander in their RVs there for another 24 years.  They would reunite once every three years for 'General Conference.'  Each band of Wanderer's is called a Ward.  Given how few Wanderers there are, each country has a Stake.  All of them report to the Prophet and Quorums.  The biggest change to the church and people would be they took up missionary work again.  Unfortunately, this didn't help their image.  A wandering group seeking converts.  Great.

Back in Pakistan, the Abandoned would slowly evolve their own way.  Their own revelations would state that Christ visited the Kashmir like he had the Americas.  They migrated to Kashmir and integrated, albeit roughly into society.  However, they were far, far more rough than their Wanderer cousins.  If someone knocked heads with them, they knocked them right back.  They built their own temple up in the glaciers.  It's been blown up twice.  But each time rebuilt.

In 2016, Jackson Tanner, an aspiring politician, would begin, successfully, to lobby for bringing the Mormons back to the US.  He succeeded in 2024 having argued the Mormons were US citizens by birth.  The genealogical records the Mormons kept were key.

The Wanderers had always had the saying, "Next Year in Nauvoo" and in 2024, it came true.

Pakistan Buying Chinese Z-10 Attack Helicopters?

Pakistan’s closest friend China is expected to give another gift this year, in shape of their famous helicopter Z10. According to reports, three Z10 helicopters are expected to be included in Pakistan Army aviation fleet, which will be helpful in cleaning the terrorism in the county.

Pakistan showed interest in purchasing Z10 helicopters, sources said. The helicopter is capable of targeting the enemy with a range of 3 to 4 kilometers without coming in reader. It is also capable of targeting in the air as well as on ground from air.

With the induction of Z10, Pakistan Army’s capability of targeting the terrorists will increase. Pakistan is already using the helicopters effectively in the war against terrorism.

Sivapithecus Remains From Miocene Neogene Pakistan

A partial hominoid innominate from the Miocene of Pakistan: Description and preliminary analyses

Authors:

Morgan et al

Abstract:

We describe a partial innominate, YGSP 41216, from a 12.3 Ma locality in the Siwalik Group of the Potwar Plateau in Pakistan, assigned to the Middle Miocene ape species Sivapithecus indicus. We investigate the implications of its morphology for reconstructing positional behavior of this ape. Postcranial anatomy of extant catarrhines falls into two distinct groups, particularly for torso shape. To an extent this reflects different although variable and overlapping positional repertoires: pronograde quadrupedalism for cercopithecoids and orthogrady for hominoids. The YGSP innominate (hipbone) is from a primate with a narrow torso, resembling most extant monkeys and differing from the broader torsos of extant apes. Other postcranial material of S. indicus and its younger and similar congener Sivapithecus sivalensis also supports reconstruction of a hominoid with a positional repertoire more similar to the pronograde quadrupedal patterns of most monkeys than to the orthograde patterns of apes. However, Sivapithecus postcranial morphology differs in many details from any extant species. We reconstruct a slow-moving, deliberate, arboreal animal, primarily traveling above supports but also frequently engaging in antipronograde behaviors. There are no obvious synapomorphic postcranial features shared exclusively with any extant crown hominid, including Pongo.

Nigeria Buying Sino-Pakistani JF-17 Fighters?

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is close to finalising an order for the purchase of one or two squadrons of the JF-17 Thunder fighter aircraft co-produced by Pakistan and China, a senior Pakistani Ministry of Defence official told IHS Jane's on 2 December.

Speaking at the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2014 in Karachi, the official said the NAF finalised its recommendation for the purchase of 25-40 JF-17s after NAF chief air marshal Adesola Nunayon Amosu visited Pakistan in October. AM Amosu's engagements in Pakistan included a visit to the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) at Kamra, north of Islamabad, where the JF-17 is manufactured.

FC-31 Fighter may Have Defects

While the twin-engine plane made by Shenyang Aircraft Corp. sort of resembles the U.S. military’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter made by Lockheed Martin Corp., it reportedly has design defects that cause it to lose altitude as it enters into turns.

Pakistan Confirms in Negotiations for Chinese FC-31 Stealth Fighter, Z-10 Attack Helicopter

Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain told Dawn on Friday the matter was being discussed with Chinese authorities.

It is for the first time that a senior government functionary has confirmed talks with China over purchase of the longer-range stealth aircraft — an issue that has been a subject of speculation in defence circles since the 10th edition of the Zhuhai Air Show (China) held earlier this month, when the aircraft was unveiled.

The Jane’s Defence Weekly had quoted an unnamed Pakistani official as saying that the PAF was holding talks with China for the purchase of 30 to 40 of the Shenyang FC-31 fighter planes and that discussions had gone beyond initial inquiries.

The FC-31 is being developed by China primarily for the export market. Chinese officials claim that several countries have expressed interest in the aircraft believed to be comparable to US F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

A prototype of the aircraft, designated as J-31, has been flown by the Chinese aircraft research and development firm Shenyang Aviation Company for a couple of years now.

What particularly interests the PAF is that FC-31 prototype (J-31) and JF-17 use the same Russian Klimov RD-93 engines.

Pakistan is increasingly relying on China as a reliable source for its defence procurements.

Mr Hussain said that Pakistan was also interested in Chinese attack helicopter Z-10.
