30,000 Year Old Mastodon Fossils Found on White Sands Missile Range

Remnants of another prehistoric elephant-like creature have been found in southern New Mexico.

White Sands Missile Range recently announced the discovery of a fossilized mastodon skeleton on the expansive military installation between Las Cruces and Alamogordo.

The mastodon fossil, dubbed "Chompers" by its discoverers, could have lived up to 30,000 years ago, based on preliminary information, an expert said.

The mastodon was first found in January in the foothills of the San Andres Mountains to the west of U.S. 70. But scientists at the time weren't able to explore it. A second team of experts in July carried out a five-day trip to the site to gather more information and stabilize it for a future excavation.
