In the Falcon Strike Exercise in 2015, a PLAAF J-11 Clubbed Thai Gripens like Baby Seals

A talk was given at China’s Northwestern Polytechnical University on Dec. 9. The speaker was reported to be Li Zhonghua who is said to have participated in Exercise Falcon Strike 2015 in Thailand. One of the slides showed the score during each day of the exercise and during the first day, the Thais flying the Gripen were beaten 16-0.

A new Small Pliopithecoid Hominoid Primate From Miocene Neogene Thailand

A new small pliopithecoid primate from the Middle Miocene of Thailand

Abstract:

Pliopithecoids represent a monophyletic group of putative stem catarrhines whose evolutionary history is incompletely known. They have been recorded from Europe and Asia, between the late Early Miocene and the Late Miocene. Asian pliopithecoids are less well documented than their European counterparts, often being represented by a fragmentary fossil record. New discoveries are therefore critical to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the whole group. Here, we describe two isolated molars from Ban San Klang, a late Middle Miocene locality in northern Thailand, which confirms the presence of pliopithecoids in Southeast Asia. The lower molar had originally been described as being that of a dendropithecoid, but it was later recognized as pertaining to a pliopithecoid. The discovery, in the same locality, of an additional upper molar attributed to the same species confirms the pliopithecoid status of this taxon and highlights its distinctiveness with respect to other known Asian pliopithecoids. However, the mosaic of primitive and autapomorphic features characterizing this Thai fossil, as well as its limited anatomical representation, preclude us from assigning it to either of the known pliopithecid subfamilies. Nevertheless, it represents the only pliopithecoid in Southeast Asia and displays a mosaic of unique characters which emphasizes the peculiarity of that province, as suggested previously with respect to its hominoid primate.

Royal Thai Navy Selects China's Yuan-class for Procurement


The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has formally selected China's Yuan-class (Type 041) platform to meet a requirement for three submarines, RTN Commander-in-Chief Admiral Kraisorn Chansuvanich, announced on 2 July.

He said the RTN's procurement committee voted unanimously in favour of purchasing the submarine, which has been designated S26T (Thailand): a reference to a modified export version of the Yuan-class. The RTN plans to take delivery of the first S26T within six to seven years.

Evidence of the Closing of the Paleo Tethys During the Permian Through Triassic in Thailand


Geochemistry and geochronology of the Chatree epithermal gold-silver deposit: Implications for the tectonic setting of the Loei Fold Belt, central Thailand

Abstract:

The Chatree deposit is the largest epithermal Au deposit in mainland SE Asia. Despite its economic significance, the stratigraphy, age, geochemistry and tectonic setting of the host volcanic sequence is poorly documented in the literature. The Chatree deposit is located between Phichit and Phetchabun provinces, central Thailand, and is hosted by Late Permian to Early Triassic volcaniclastic and volcanogenic sedimentary rocks. Detailed field mapping, U-Pb zircon dating, geochemistry and stratigraphy suggest that the volcanic sequence can be subdivided into four stratigraphic units and two volcanic suites. The Late Permian Suite 1 volcanic units are sourced from a more depleted mantle relative to the overlying Early Triassic Suite 2 volcanic units. The Late Permian units Suite 1 probably formed immediately after the beginning of subduction and at the creation of a new island arc. The less depleted Early Triassic Suite 2 units were erupted during ongoing subduction once the system had achieved a steady state. The Chatree Au mineralization appears to have occurred during the switch between the two mantle sources and this switch of magma source is marked by a mixed volcano-plutonic magmatism at the Permo-Triassic boundary (ca. 250 Ma).

Krabia minuta: A Priabonian Eocene Anthropoid From Thailand


The fossilized jaw of a pint-size primate that lived about 35 million years ago in Asia has been unearthed in Thai coal mines.

The new species, dubbed Krabia minuta, after the Krabi coal mines where it was found, was an ancient, extinct member of a group of primates called anthropoids, which includes the ancestors to all monkeys and apes, including humans. Even so, the creature showed peculiar features, including its distinct molars, not seen in other members of this primate group.

The tiny primate emerged during a mysterious period when primates somehow moved across a vast sea from Asia to Africa.

"The Asian anthropoids were probably more diversified than what we know today and also probably played a more important role in the origin of the modern crown anthropoids than we suspected," said study co-author Jean-Jacques Jaeger, a paleontologist at the Université de Poitiers in France.
