I completely agree, but I think your suggestion should apply broadly to every person in all walks of life.
Scientific types need to back up their claims with hard data/meaningful observation/analysis.
Everyone else in the world is an expert on everything, thanks to the internet. They read one Yahoo! article about something based on a single scientific study and suddenly they know what they're talking about.
Ironically, the info to back up their pseudo-knowledge is ever present on the internet as well. :)
