Funds have been set aside to continue construction of the first two Ford-class aircraft carriers in the US Navy's (USN's) fiscal year 2015 (FY 2015) shipbuilding budget request, while USN budgeteers, as expected, have deferred to FY 2016 a decision that will impact an in-service Nimitz-class carrier and, ultimately, the future size of the navy's carrier fleet.
Navy officials are requesting USD1.3 billion to continue funding the detailed design and construction of the second Ford-class carrier, John F Kennedy (CVN 79). The FY 2015 budget also includes USD663 million for 'fact-of-life' cost increases on construction of lead ship Gerald R Ford (CVN 78), which is being completed at Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia.
