The lead ship of the US Navy's (USN's) new class of amphibious assault ship is making preparations to sail to its California home port via a two-month transit around Latin America, during which the vessel will embark US Marines, MV-22 Ospreys, and H-60 helicopters, officials told IHS Jane's on 14 May.
Pre-commissioning unit (PCU) America (LHA 6) will take the unusual measure of embarking US Marine Corps (USMC) personnel and aircraft during its initial transit, as part of a training and operational concept development plan, said Captain Robert A Hall Jr, America 's commanding officer.
