Russian Navy to Experiment to Modular Ship Building

The Russian Navy plans to test out warship modular construction principles on a corvette in the near future, defence ministry officials told reporters on 8 January 2014.

The approach is being developed by representatives of the Russian Navy's High Command, the Naval Academy, and United Shipbuilding Corporation (OSK).

Building modular warships is something new for Russia. Naval officers raised the idea in the past, perhaps as early as the 1970s. More recently, 2012 saw media reports of plans to build warships using modular methods. However, few concrete steps have been taken - in part, according to some analyses, because political change often saw such ideas being forgotten.
