Russia to Start Construction of Two Borey class SSBNs in 2014

Russia plans to lay keels for two more Borey-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) in 2014, a defence industry source told state news agency RIA Novosti on 9 January.

Keel-laying ceremonies will occur on or around two Russian Navy holidays - Submariners' Day on 19 March and Navy Day on 27 July.

The next two SSBNs will be the fifth and sixth vessels of the Borey class and the second and third of a modernised design (Project 955A). They will reportedly be named Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov.

Russia plans to have eight Borey-class SSBNs by 2020.
